ALMENDARES SCORPIONS 1923
Almendares is a district on the outskirts of Old Havana. In the Cuban League, enduring from 1878 to 1961, the Alacranes were the arch rivals of the Havana team and were the first Cubans to play statesiders, the Bitter Hops Baseball Club in 1881. The Cuban League was racially integrated in 1900 and in the 20’s included many stars of the Negro Leagues. The portrait at left is Cuban Hall of Famer Bienvenido “Hooks” Jiminez.
