Ball Caps of the 20th Century - Semi-Pro Teams - MARTINSVILLE ATHLETICS 1924

The cap to the left represents a troubled youth, John Dillinger, who grew up a Cubs fan and played baseball on Indiana sandlots. Nicknamed “The Jackrabbit” he ran the bases with speed. Almost as fast he deserted the Navy and failed at marriage. But he succeeded at shortstop for the Martinsville Athletics where Johnny Dillinger was paid to play baseball. He led the league in batting, earning a $25 reward from Old Hickory Furniture and his team to the league championship. We’ve copied this story from Gary Cieradkowski’s beautifully colored book The League of Outsider Baseball. White with Navy Narrow Pinstripe Crown, Navy 3” Firm Visor, Leather Sweatband, Big Navy Felt Logo
