Ball Caps of the 20th Century - Semi-Pro Teams - BROOKLYN BUSHWICKS 1940

The Bushwicks, they were a semi-pro team based in the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens, New York at Dexter Park, a large entertainment complex along the lines of a miniature Coney Island. They were founded by an Austrian immigrant and cigar manufacturer around 1917. The team grew from a morale-boosting club for his employees into a talented squad that beat all their neighborhood rivals. There was a mixture of young local tri-state talent and mercenary professionals. Whitey Ford got his start with them. Many former big leaguers like Dazzy Vance stretched out their careers there. Besides playing against local semi-pro squads and industrial league teams, the Bushwicks attracted the best Negro League and one odd aspect of Dexter Park was that the crowd usually cheered for the visitors instead of the home team. Navy Wool Crown, Orange 3”visor, Felt Logo.
