The jazz club, Birdland, opened in New York City in 1949. and was named after the immortal saxophonist Charlie Parker who was the headliner at the club, During the 1950s, it was a fashionable place for stars such Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Sugar Ray Robinson, Marlene Dietrich, Joe Louis, Judy Garland to be seen and it was a tradition with all the nightclub semi-pro teams of that era to insert ringers from NYCís professional baseball players teams.
