NEW ORLEANS PELICANS 1943
This team goes way back. Founded in 1865 as an amateur social and sporting organization, they became a professional franchise when they joined the Southern League in 1887 and lasted in that illustrious minor league until 1957. The 1910 Southern League Champion Pelicans featured Shoeless Joe Jackson in his only season there won the league batting title, his last stop before the majors. In 1914 the Pelican Park wooden grandstand was moved by mule teams to Mid-City New Orleans where they played until 1957. Two years later they were gone to Little Rock. Two years after that the Southern League itself folded. Dazzy Vance played there and so did Bob Lemon, and Earl Weaver, but the last place 1942 team featured nothing at all save a classic cap. Navy Wool Body, Navy Firm 3” Visor, Navy on White Felt Appliqué Logo.
