ETHIOPIAN CLOWNS 1925
In the 1929 the Miami Clowns aka the Ethiopian Clowns added comedy as an extra to established baseball games. Other black teams looked down upon these high jinks because it perpetuated the worst stereotypes. But when they were reformed in 1937 as an independent, barnstorming baseball team by Syd Pollock, a successful promoter, the Clowns developed into a nationally-known combination of show business and baseball - the Harlem Globetrotters of the diamond. 1943 the Clowns joined the Negro American League for 12 years playing first in Cincinnati and then in Indianapolis before disbanding in 1954.
